Google Phone

Google surprised a lot of people following the introduction of the Droid with its own Google Phone called the Nexus One. Unlike previous cell phones using Google's cell phone operating system, the Nexus One Google Phone was sold directly by Google instead of via the more traditional model of selling cellular phones through mobile phone companies.

The original Google phone system based cell phone was the Droid which was sold by Verizon Wireless. The Nexus One can also be purchased with a Verizon contract for a reduced price. However, Google has come under some scrutiny for its very high termination fees that are levied on top of the Verizon termination fees if the user cancels the phone plan within a short period of time.

What Is The Google Phone

Why all of the hype about the Nexus One Google phone and its operating system called Android?

For one thing, Microsoft has fallen woefully behind with the development of its own Windows Mobile operating system. Coupled with the large advancements made by Apple's iPhone platform demonstrated two things. First, that Microsoft Windows on mobile devices was actually holding back the adoption of high-end Internet usage on mobile devices (and if you aren't online, Google can't make money from you), and second that with Windows Mobile continuing to dominate the overall number of cell phones and mobile devices in use, waiting for Microsoft to improve its mobile platform was not in Google's best interest.

Google's Nexus One cell phone serves many purposes for the company. The most important is that it gives the company control over how the Google Phone is developed and rolled out to the public. Google no longer has to worry about having features marginalized by carriers that don't have the same business objectives. For any shortcomings on a carrier based Android phone, Google need only point at its now flagship Nexus One phone for all of the great things a Google phone can do.

Lastly, the Nexus One Google Phone  is sold as an "unlocked" cell phone, meaning that it can be used with any cell phone carrier that supports the mobile technology inside of it. In other words, the owner of a Google Nexus One cell phone could continue to be a Google phone user even if they are no longer a Verizon user.
